Gerard Gorman
Gerard is a very experienced birding and wildlife guide having led over 600 tours. He began in the late 1980s, soon after finishing a scholarship in Budapest, with pioneering trips around Hungary, Romania and the then Czechoslovakia. Since 2005 he has organised and guided many tours for Heatherlea in Central and Eastern Europe, including Austria, Belarus, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Gerard has unrivalled experience in the region and is the author of The Birds of Hungary, Birding in Eastern Europe and Central & Eastern European Wildlife.
Gerard is also very well-travelled globally, and regularly leads for us in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. Gerard’s favourite bird family is the woodpeckers. Indeed, he is regarded as an authority on these popular birds and has written numerous papers and the books Woodpeckers of the World: The Complete Guide, Woodpeckers of Europe, The Black Woodpecker and most recently Woodpeckers for the RSPB’s Spotlight series. He also has a keen interest in animal tracking: his book Tracks & Signs, which deals with European wildlife came out in 2014. When not leading tours, writing books or studying woodpeckers, Gerard likes to record bird songs and sounds. Originally from Merseyside Gerard is based in Budapest.
