The Ebro Delta has been so far overlooked by many British birders, but this is surely about to change. Ideally situated on the northern Mediterranean coast, the birding here can be exceptional, and certainly compares with Camargue and Po Delta for its range and sheer numbers. Easy to reach just two hours south of Barcelona, the Ebro Delta is a very attractive destination for an exciting short break, and we have timed our visit to coincide with the best time for autumn migration.
We are based in a comfortable hotel where locals form most of the clientele, featuring rural Spanish cuisine. Birding will be varied, with a wide range of water birds in the delta area itself, a good selection of higher altitude species in the nearby mountainous Els Port area, and the excitement of autumn migration through this key region. We will enjoy two full days birding the delta area, plus a marked contrast spending a day birding the nearby Els Port mountains, including a visit to a spectacular vulture feeding station. We hope to attend a bird ringing session, where possibilities include Cetti's, Great Reed, Reed and Willow Warblers. We also have additional birding opportunities on arrival and depature days, to help us towards a list of over 120 species.
On the final morning we return to Barcelona Airport for our flight home, though a city break extension to Barcelona is available for those who want to explore one of Europe's premier cities.
Don't forget that this holiday includes your pre-flight hotel at Gatwick, on Fri 30 August.
Day 1: Sat 31 Aug Arrival and Transfer to the Ebro Delta
Relax in our VIP Lounge before your flight, included in your holiday price. On arrival at Barcelona airport, we collect our minibuses and begin with local birding around the area, perhaps collecting some of the European passerines which can't be expected in the Delta, including Short-toed Treecreeper and Firecrest. If we are lucky, we might find Iberian Green Woodpecker, now split from the nominate species, and breeding in a location close to the airport. Next we transfer to our comfortable hotel in the Ebro Delta, and settle into our traditional-style rooms before a delicious three course dinner with wine.
Day 2: Sun 1 Sep Ebro Delta
Before breakfast, our hotel pond may yield Little Bittern, Night Heron and Kingfisher, great birding on our doorstep! After breakfast we enjoy local birding in several hotspots of the Ebro Delta. This region is alive with birds in early September, and you can expect up to eight herons, eight terns, many gulls including Audouin's, Slender-billed and Mediterranean, and a host of waders, perhaps twenty species on the first day. Many migratory breeding birds are en-route south, so we watch out for possible surprises such as Dotterel and Bluethroat, as well as migrating warblers. We can anticipate Greater Flamingo, Great, Cattle and Little Egret, Purple Heron, Kingfisher, Glossy Ibis, Red-crested Pochard, Curlew Sandpiper, Little and Temminck's Stint, Whimbrel, Black-winged Stilt, Gull-billed Tern, Short-toed Lark, Great Reed Warbler and perhaps Booted Eagle, Marsh Harrier and Osprey. We enjoy a picnic lunch in a birding hide or by the beach to make the most of our full day in the field.
Day 3: Mon 2 Sep Raptor Watching and Mountain Birding
Early breakfast before heading for a vulture feeding station, where we expect to see hundreds of Griffon Vultures at close quarters. Other raptors are possible, including Black Vulture and Egyptian Vulture (unlikely here but possible as single migrating birds), and both Red Kite and Black Kite, though Griffons at very close quarters are the main attraction. This unique opportunity should give excellent chances for photography (though NB the viewing hide allows photo through windows only). We will have a picnic lunch whilst birdwatching in the mountains of Els Ports, where we might see a variety of birds including Booted, Short-toed, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Crested Tit, Woodchat Shrike, Cirl Bunting, Hoopoe, Bee-eater and perhaps Roller. There are incidentary opportunities to see some interesting European butterflies, perhaps including Cleopatra, Cardinal and Two-tailed Pasha.
Other birds that can be seen include Firecrest, Serin, Red-billed Chough, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Rock Sparrow and Crag Martin. We also hope to see rare and beautiful Spanish Ibex. Late in the afternoon we return to the Ebro Delta, where we again have dinner in our hotel.
Day 4: Tue 3 Sep Ebro Delta
Today we may begin by attending a bird ringing session (subject to availability), where possibilities include Cetti's, Great Reed, Reed and Willow Warblers. Later we again round-up birds of the delta, which will almost certainly have changed since our first visit, with many birds moving through on a daily and even hourly basis. We may well see Caspian Tern, Whiskered Tern, Purple Swamphen, Night Heron, Lesser Short-toed Lark and Reed Bunting (of the rare witherbyii subspecies), Little Bittern, Squacco Heron, Collared Pratincole, many migrating Yellow Wagtails of differing subspecies, Kentish Plover, with a chance of Long-eared and Scops Owl, and Penduline Tit.
Day 5: Wed 4 Sep Departure
After breakfast we transfer to Barcelona Airport for our return home, with some birding at nearby wetlands to boost our lists and complete a memorable few days.
Days 5 - ... : Wed 4 Sep - ... BARCELONA optional extension
