Where do you go in the ‘quiet’ birding weeks of summer? Glorious scenery, long evenings and the best summer birding in Britain await you with Heatherlea. We will watch Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Peregrine, fishing Osprey, Slavonian Grebe, Red and Black-throated Divers, Capercaillie, Scottish Crossbill and Crested Tit ...........and lots, lots more! Breeding Ptarmigan and Dotterel guarantee a great day out on the mountains, and we also utilise the evening light to seek out quartering Short-eared Owl over local heather moorland. Guaranteed excitement from magnificent mountain-top to the scenic grandeur of Mull, where we watch for eagles and otters. July is the best month in the Highlands for butterflies, and as we go you may well see Northern Brown Argus, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Large Heath among others.

With all the special birds, from the magnificent scenery of the high mountain tops to the steppes of central Spain, this holiday is a brilliant choice for birding the Pyrenees. We spend five nights high in the mountains north of Hecho to see Lammergeier, Wallcreeper, Black Woodpecker, Snow Finch (yes we have a breeding site!), Alpine Accentor, and Alpine Chough. There are many Red Kite and Black Kite, and we take an evening drive for Nightjar and Eagle Owl. Other birds include Citril Finch, Red-billed Chough, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Woodchat Shrike, Cirl Bunting, Serin, Golden Oriole, Booted Eagle and Honey Buzzard.
We then head south through the plains of Aragon for a complete contrast. In Riglos, incredible sandstone towers pierce the sky. Here we see vultures at the nest, Alpine Swift, Short-toed Eagle and Golden Eagle, and Dartford Warbler, Rock Sparrow, Linnet and Black Redstart are in the stony scrub above the towns. Near Huesca we look for Black Wheatear, Black-eared Wheatear, Crested Lark, Montagu’s Harrier, Spotless Starling and Thekla Lark.
In the steppes we search for Little Bustard, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Roller, and many more including Little Owl, Hoopoe, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Calandra Lark, Short-toed Lark and Red-necked Nightjar. On recent trips we also heard the haunting call of Dupont’s Lark, and added Bonelli’s Eagle, Lesser Short-toed Lark, Melodious Warbler and Ortolan Bunting to our lists.
