If you haven’t yet been birding abroad, and are wondering where
to go first, this is the perfect choice. In Mallorca with Heatherlea you
should see many birds which are rare in the UK – Hoopoe, Wryneck,
Golden Oriole and Bee-eater come quickly to mind, with Stone Curlew, Cirl
Bunting, Little Bittern, Crossbill, Woodchat Shrike, Firecrest, Serin
and Roller close behind. You will also see a whole range of European
species to stay in your mind forever. Imagine the sight of huge Black
Vulture soaring imperiously overhead, or the list of Squacco, Night and
Purple Heron plus perhaps three Egret species, or the array of different
swifts, warblers and larks we will seek out for you. Other special birds
should include Blue Rock Thrush, Collared Pratincole, Purple Swamphen,
Kentish Plover, Temminck’s Stint, Audouin’s Gull, Whiskered
Tern, Tawny Pipit, flava Yellow Wagtail, Black-eared Wheatear, Greater
Flamingo, Glossy Ibis, both Cory’s and Balearic Shearwater, Scops
Owl, Crag Martin …….. if that isn’t enough, look forward
to fabulous raptor watching! Egyptian Vulture, Honey Buzzard, Red Kite,
Black Kite, Booted Eagle, Hobby, Peregrine, Osprey, lots of Marsh Harrier,
and of course the fabulous darting Eleonora’s Falcon. If this is
your first overseas birding trip you should see well over thirty new birds.
All this at a relaxed pace very well suited to the Heatherlea style –
you won’t have to worry about holding up the group, birding from
dawn to dusk or not knowing which bird you are looking at. We are based in one location for the whole
holiday and most of the walking is easy, as we ensure that the spirit of Heatherlea transfers across to the
lovely island of Mallorca!

Day 1 Saturday 1 May
Depart London for Palma Mallorca and transfer (about one hour) to our comfortable hotel. This family run hotel offers comfortable en-suite rooms, ideally located in a quiet town away from the main ‘tourist run’. Some of the special birds (Wryneck, Serin, Scops Owl, Hoopoe, Firecrest) can be seen from the hotel windows! Food is good quality, traditional Mallorcan fare. We organise big picnics when away from the hotel.
Day 2 Sunday 2 May – Day 7 Friday 7 May
Six full days exploring all the special habitats, from the hills of the Tramontera Mountains to seawatching at Salinas and Formentor. We spend time at the marshes of Albufereta and S’Albufera (not always at the published birding sites), visit the spectacular Arta peninsula, and enjoy relaxed walking around our hotel. We also investigate the places where migrants like to rest before continuing towards the European mainland, on wires, trees and bushes in a number of special places, and also above our heads in the tremendous Boquer Valley. We finish on Friday with dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 8 Saturday 8 May
Early birding before we transfer to Palma and return to London.
Price includes return scheduled flight from London – Palma, airport taxes, ground transportation, en suite accommodation on a full-board basis at a comfortable family hotel, picnic lunches, incidental tips, and the services of experienced Heatherlea Leader John Poyner, joined by another from our guiding team with more than 7 clients. Max 14 clients.
Please note: all itineraries are given as a guide only. Actual
