This holiday is dedicated to finding all ten European woodpeckers; Black, White-backed, Green, Grey-headed, Great Spotted, Middle Spotted, Syrian, Lesser Spotted and Threetoed Woodpecker plus Wryneck as well as key forest owls and raptors - a great hit list of key European birds! We stay in three centres, visiting the Sumava National Park, the Trebon Basin Biosphere Reserve in South Bohemia and the Palava Biosphere Reserve in South Moravia.
 
Owls on our search list include Ural, Pygmy, Eagle and Tengmalm's. We
have a good chance of seeing many raptors including Saker Falcon, Peregrine,
Hobby, Black Kite, Honey Buzzard, Goshawk, and Eastern Imperial and White-tailed
Eagle. At the time of our visit Black Grouse will be lekking, Hazel Grouse
is here (but hard to see), and the ‘supporting cast’ might
include Nutcracker, Bluethroat (white-spotted race), Hoopoe, Woodlark,
Red-backed Shrike, Great Grey Shrike, White Stork, Black Stork, Common
Crossbill, Firecrest and Crested Tit, Serin, Black Redstart, Hawfinch,
Collared Flycatcher, Short-toed Treecreeper and the first arriving warbler
species.
Wetland birds to entertain us include Black-necked Grebe, Great White
Egret, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Little Bittern, displaying Goldeneye,
Garganey, Red-crested Pochard and other wildfowl, Green Sandpiper, and
Penduline and Bearded Tit. We will be working particularly hard on this
holiday to maximise your list of these much sought after birds –
expect a few early starts and late finishes.
 
The holiday is led by Gerard Gorman, author of 'Woodpeckers of Europe', whose knowledge and skills are exceptional. We asked
Gerard to devise this holiday for us in 2005 specifically to see all the 'peckers, and you couldn't be in better hands.
The photo taken by Kevin in 2006 of a Black Woodpecker at the nest, 'called in' by Gerard, looks uncannily like the cover of the book - you really get the genuine wild experience on this holiday, and as you can see above, there are plenty of other top birds too!
